My 10 good reasons not to buy a house in NZ

I feel hot…Yes, I feel truly hot tonight. No, I am not in heat and definitely not having sex either. It is the bloody ventilation (or the lack of it) in my flat. As I write this, I felt like sitting in an oversize oven baking myself with maximum temperature. Who in the right mind will build such badly designed houses?

If I want to buy a house, NZ is the last place that I would ever consider. Below are my hate list about New Zealand houses:-

  1. The building materials and design are so-so. Yet they are grossly overrated and overpriced
  2. They are made of wood – The main reason of deforestation :-p With one burning torch, it could reduce the structure into a pile of ashes
  3. Too cold in winter too hot in summer – If you don’t mind paying a fortune in electricity bills, then go ahead install heater and air conditioner
  4. Poor ventilation – Throw away your air refresher because they ended up adding more flavours to “wonderful” stench that will make you faint. The stale air and dampness is the perfect breeding ground for fungi, mould and mildew
  5. Rot easily and prone to leaking – It will put a dent in your account with all these high maintenance and upkeep costs
  6. Poor sound proofing – Unless you enjoy hearing your neighbour arguing or stoming around the house like 800 pound gorillas. You better pay heaps of money to rip up your walls and stuffed them with Pinkbatts if you want to enjoy the quietness
  7. Building materials not fireproof – Be prepared to forked out a fortune to install sprinklers and smoke alarms if you want to protect your precious home and belongings
  8. Flimsy – They creaked so loudly during 100 km/h winds and you wonder when they will collapsed
  9. Perfect candidate for sick building syndrome – So you can apply for more sick leave :-p
  10. They always come with carpets – Hard to clean and good place to raise dust bunnies
