My Summer Holiday – Part 7 (Gold mining, bungy jumping and cherries…)

The day after I had my adrenaline rush joyride, I headed to Arrowtown for a short visit. It is a quaint little town with some of fine shops. Of course, I splurged a little by buying myself a nice jacket and a ring. After a pleasant lunch, I took a stroll at the Chinese Settler Village and looked at the ruins.

The settler village highlighted another dark chapter of the NZ gold mining history. The poor settlers who thought they could get a better life ended up with broken dreams. They had to endure harsh weather and appalling living conditions as well as bad treatment from the locals (the bigoted Europeans). It made my heart ached when I read about the history details propped at the stands in the village.

After that, I continued the journey to Kawarau Bungy Centre where I watched some blokes performing some bungy jumping at the bridge. With the price tag of NZD 150 per person, I must say that the jump is not cheap. I didn’t stay long because the group whom I traveled with wanted to continue the journey and I followed suit.

We drove pass the beautiful vineyards and gorges along the way. There’s nothing much to see apart from the stark and bare landscape. We stopped by Roxburgh and sampled some nice cherries. I have never seen so many cherry trees before in my whole life. The mouth watering cherries dotted the trees are so tempting. No wonder the farmers covered them in large nets to prevent the birds and humans from eating them.

After that, we drove all the way to Dunedin where we stayed overnight in the one of the most appalling backpacker I have ever seen…
